A course for facilitators, providers, and others working in psychedelic and spiritual spaces
Addressing abuse in psychedelic spaces
Oct 18 - Nov 15, 2022, Tuesdays 5:30-7:30 pm
If you spend significant time in the psychedelic community you have likely heard stories of abuse.
From the corners of the amazon to our own backyard, it seems more and more survivors are coming forward. While these stories of abuse by facilitators and intimate partners may be new to us, these abuses of power have been in the background since the beginning.
This has always been the shadow side of the psychedelic movement. Now that we as a community are starting to become more aware of the prevalance of abuse, we have a chance to learn how we can do better. If we don’t learn to better handle the shadows of abuse within our community, we risk losing the movement entirely.
This course by no means has all the answers, but it can increase our understanding and help those in the psychedelic movement begin to create solutions from a place of deeper understanding. From this deeper understanding, we can begin to ask good questions that can lead to radical, transformative, and hopefully long-lasting change.
In this course, you will learn:
Defining abuse and how it differs from harm, conflict, or misunderstanding
A deep understanding of what is and isn’t abusive behavior
The psychology that causes abusive behaviors and how it develops in individuals
The unique dangers of mixing psychedelic medicine with abusive practitioners
Understanding the relationship and misconceptions related to personality disorders (i.e., narcissism) and abuse
What abuse looks like in the context of a therapeutic relationship
Ethical boundaries to have with clients to prevent abuse as a provider
How to tell if your client is or was in an abusive relationship
How to support survivors who have received abuse or are in current abusive situations
How abuse shows up in spiritual groups
An understanding of how abusive tendencies are currently treated in the therapeutic field
Strategies to approach transformative justice and accountability when encountering abusers in community spaces
Skills and tools to heal and protect our communities
